DAY 3 - Seminar Ambassadors of Change
The theme of today's workshops was Forest gardening.
Maxime presented us his way of designing a system where a diversity of trees provide a support system for crops and fruit trees destined to consumption.
We learned that if we want to consider the autonomy and resilience of a forest garden, one that will cater to its own needs, we ideally think of trees that will :
🛡 Protect from the wind and the sun and foster a microclimate
🐝 Provide housing to bees and other polinators
🦜 Host crop auxiliaries (animals that will hunt crop predators)
⛓ Fixate nutrients into the soil
🌾 Provide ground cover for surface activity
🥕 Generate biomass to be absorbed by micro-organisms
🧬 Maintain the structure of the soil
We also explored the ergonomic design most adapted to various situations, in order to balance out efficient work and tree density.
Finally, we went out in the fields to simulate various designs taking into consideration the hydromorphy, soil composition, sunlight exposure and topography of one of the Northern Lights' parcels.
A rich day we closed around the fire, to warm us during these chili April days!
