Day 4 - Seminar Ambassadors of Change
We focused on dynamical rotational grazing. The challenge is to know how to graze herbivores as efficiently as possible. Here is a very short summary of what we learned :
🌱The animals only have to eat half the height of the grass. If they cut the grass too low, the roots will no longer grow, producing soil compaction. The result is a vicious circle: compacted soil doesn't allow roots to grow, so grass grows less.
🌿To avoid this phenomenon, you need to move your animals from one paddock to another very, very regularly (every 3 days, for example), so that the grass always has time to grow back.
☘️Calculating the size of paddocks and the number of days before a rotation is a real science! A lot of calculations and data come into play.
🌳Finally, a meadow is nothing without trees. They help aerate the soil and absorb water. We urgently need to replant trees in the countryside!
At the end of the afternoon, those who wished could look after the horses, while others made sourdough bread.
